Position, layer and cut out your shots

Transform & compositing

Compositing is about placing and combining images: where a clip sits in the frame, how it blends with the layers below, and which parts show through. All of these controls live in the Inspector on the right when a clip is selected.

Position, scale, rotate and opacity

Inspector › Transform

Reframe or resize any clip, spin it, or make it partly see-through to reveal the layer underneath.

  1. Select a clip on the timeline.
  2. In the Inspector, open Transform and adjust Position, Scale, Rotation and Opacity.
  3. Use Fit to frame to reset a clip to full frame and clear any transform animation.

You can also drag a clip directly in the preview to reposition it.

The Inspector holds every property of the selected clip, grouped into sections.

Blend modes

Inspector › Transform › Blend

Change how a clip mixes with the layers below: great for light leaks, textures and overlays.

  1. Stack a clip on a track above another.
  2. Set its Blend mode: Screen and Lighten add light, Multiply and Darken deepen, Overlay boosts contrast, Difference inverts.
  3. Combine with Opacity to dial in the strength.

Keyframe animation

Inspector › Animation

Animate transform values over time, so a clip can pan, zoom or fade as it plays.

  1. Turn on Keyframe (animate) for the property you want to move.
  2. Add a keyframe, move the playhead, then change the value (or drag the clip in the preview).
  3. Pick an interpolation curve (Linear, Ease in, Ease out, Ease in-out) to shape the motion.

Use Clear animation to remove all keyframes from a property and go back to a static value.

Crop and masks

Inspector › Mask / Crop

Show only part of a clip with a crop, or a rectangle, ellipse or freeform polygon mask.

  1. Choose a mask shape: Rectangle, Ellipse or Polygon.
  2. Adjust position, size and Feather for soft edges; use Invert to hide the shape instead of keeping it.
  3. For a polygon, drag points in the preview, click an edge to add a point, double-click to remove one.
  4. Add a mask keyframe to animate the shape across the shot.

Green screen (chroma key)

Inspector › Green screen

Knock out a solid-color background so your subject sits over another layer.

  1. Enable Green screen on the clip.
  2. Tune Tolerance to remove more or less of the color, and Softness for cleaner edges.
  3. Use Despill to remove color fringing left on the subject.

Borders and censor blur

Inspector › Border / Censor

Frame a clip with a border, or hide a face, logo or plate with a moving blur.

  1. Add a border and set its thickness, color and opacity.
  2. Add a censor blur, position the region over what to hide, and set the blur strength.
  3. Use Track target so the blur follows a moving subject automatically.
